Have you ever wondered if there is more to life than the next step. Getting that degree, that new job, the new car, new house?
Jesus answered this question for us 2,000 years ago, there is a purpose to life, there is a meaning to life, and it is much more than just “keeping up with the Jones’s”
In Luke chapter 12 Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem with a group of followers he spoke these words to a crowd of thousands that had gathered to hear him:
“Be dressed and ready for service and keep your lamps burning.” Luke 12:35 NIV
“It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.” Luke 12:37 NIV
In the words above Jesus is telling the crowd to be ready for the time that the Lord has appointed for each individuals life to end. There will be a day when we all have to answer for our time spent here on earth, whether it be at the time of Christ’s second coming or the time of our death here on earth. Jesus says in the same chapter:
“But understand this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Luke 12:39, 40
Because we do not know when our time on this earth will end we must be prepared. For those servants that are prepared for their time on earth to end they will be greeted in the Heavens with great celebration and reward upon their arrival. Treasures will be placed at their feet by Christ to account for all of the work of God that have completed in their time on earth. For those servants that were not ready and prepared for their life to be over, they may have the opportunity to enter the gates of Heaven and escape the fires of Hell, but they will not be greeted upon arrival with the same treasures and rewards that Christ has placed at the feet of his dutiful servants who were loyal during their time here on earth.
Our homes, finances, talents, and everything we have been entrusted with here on earth are on loan from God. We have been instructed by God to live within his will, to do the work of his Kingdom in our time here on earth, and not to live for our own selfish desires. If we but seek his will in our lives, first and foremost, above all other things we will be ready and prepared for our time on earth to end no matter how unexpectedly. If we make the decision daily to seek his will in our lives we will be greeted by a Savior that places rewards at our feet and crowns on our head as we enter the pearly gates of Heaven. We can choose to live our short time here on earth selfishly for ourselves, or we can live our short time here on earth in God’s will, doing his work, and reap the rewards of that life for an eternity in Heaven. The choice is ours.
“Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.‘” Luke 9:23 NIV
